Kept to a minimum...

Back online after my computer crashed - fingers crossed I can get my HD recovered, otherwise I'll have lost a lot of tunes...

Here is one I was lucky enough to have backed up before the PC took a dive.

Track : NEW ORDER - "CONFUSION (RICARDO VILLALOBOS REMIX)"

Firstly, RIP New Order. Though no doubt they'll be back in some form or another at some point.

Secondly, has there been a decent New Order remix in recent years? Everyone knows all the best New Order 12"s were rounded up by Factory and put out 20 years ago - jesus, 20 years ago... - on the classic "Substance 1987" comp. Since then I can only think of Farley & Heller's remix of "Regret" and Hardfloor's 303 re-squelch of "Blue Monday" as being any good.

Well, as New Order call it a day, it's taken a limited edition, one sided 12" and a remix of their 1983 track "Confusion", by the current king of minimal, Ricardo Villalobos, to raise the bar for New Order remixes.

This one may take a while to get under your skin. It's Villallobos at the controls. And he, as usual, is in no hurry. Nine and a half minutes of stripped back, minimal, tech business with Barney Sumner's vocals sparing spaced over the duration of the track. It's completely different from the original, kinetic, early NY electro production by Arthur Baker.

And on a side note, I highly recommend Villalobos' mix for the ongoing Fabric series. To all intents and purposes this is less a various artists mix but more a proper album by the artist. It plays like one ongoing, mutating piece of music with each track slightly adding a bit more to the proceedings, be it a hi-hat, a beat or just some chord structures. But at it's heart it is very, very minimal.

Enjoy.

"Babylon And Ting"

I've spent the best part of this week playing Jeff Minter's "Space Giraffe" on my 360.

Minter has taken David Theurer's 1981 Tempest arcade game for Atari and remixed it, again in his trademark psychedelic wigout fashion, for the Xbox Live Arcade.

Stick with me on this one. It plays kind of like Tempest (you navigate around the outside of a vector web shooting enemies that approach from within) but instead of controlling a spacecraft, you control a Giraffe.

Yes, a Giraffe.

In space.

Add to this the trippiest light show imaginable, some 100 weird geometric shaped levels and sound effects that include various animal noises, divebombing planes, ringing telephones and The KLF's "MU! MU!" chant.

It all adds up to a bewildering and addictive experience. Once you get the hang of it...

My wife saw the game for the first time yesterday She uttered 3 sentences after watching a few minutes of it :

"It's all just lines and lights"

"No wonder you've got bad eyesight"

and

"Did you actually pay money for that?"

Anyway, this brings me to this post. Each level has it's own unique shape and name. When I got to Level 16 I burst out laughing as it was called "Babylon And Ting".

I'm hoping it's named after this slice of trippy ambient dub...

Track : THE ORB - "TOWERS OF DUB"

You should all know this by now, what with it's Victor Lewis Smith prank phone call beginning and it's epic 15 minute excursion through bass and dogs barking...

Track : PETER RICHARD - "WALKING IN THE NEON (CLUB VERSION)"

As Space Giraffe's light show is part sound to light synthesizer, the game responds well to the addition of your own music. My current fave to have booming out my telly whilst shooting giant flowers and crawlers is this 1985 Italo track with it's "speeding through the cosmos" refrain.

Shame the track wasn't called "Walking In The Nuon".

(one for you Minter fans there...)

A tenuous post...

Track : MEAT BEAT MANIFESTO - "PSYCHE-OUT"
Track : MEAT BEAT MANIFESTO - "DEVIATE"

At the late 80's / early 90's, when I was in my clubbing prime, I used to knock up mix tapes of the current 12"s and the like for booming out in friends cars on our way to wherever that nights clubbing was taking us. If I ran out of the countless remixes of Moby's "Go" or Bizarre Inc's "Playing With Knives" I used to raid my collection of Industrial records by artists such as Nitzer Ebb, Front 242, Consolidated and Meat Beat Manifesto to pad those C90's out. As the "rave" sound has becoming harder, tracks by those I just mentioned used to fit in nicely. Often these tracks would prove to be a bit harsher than what we were hearing out.

I got introduced to the music of Meat Beat Manifesto via a guy working in a Glasgow record shop. Whilst discussing sampling in records he uttered the inevitable "have you heard this?" and proceeded to play some tracks from "Storm The Studio". It was a right ole racket. Samples flying off in every direction, hip hop beats crunching up the speakers, dubby basslines rocking the shop, guitars piercing through it all and no to mention the primitive vocals... It got some funny looks in the shop, but I was hooked, bought a copy and gleefully went home knowing that this would soon be echoing out of my bedroom and terrifying my family...

"Storm The Studio" is still a frightening experience today, as was the next release I picked up by them, the aptly titled debut album that never was, "Armed Audio Warfare". Inbetween these releases came an album called "99%". It wasn't as harsh as the previous things I had heard, it was still hard enough, but it saw the band tighten up and their sound start to change. After that album they veered away from the industrial sound and explored more dance orientated things. The next 12" "Radio Bablyon" would go on to become a seminal rave track and would cement Meat Beat Manifesto as UK dance music pioneers with their techniques being echoed through scenes such as Drum & Bass and Big Beat. That's not to say the band don't exist anymore, far from it, they're still going strong...

"Psyche-Out" and "Deviate" are from "99%". Both still sound fierce 17 years on. Both indictive of the bands change from Industrial to Dance - "Deviate" being the more dancey with it's Todd Terry / "Disco Circus" break all the way through it.

Degrade Yourself.

Track : MEAT BEAT MANIFESTO - "RADIO BABYLON"

What can be said. It's a classic. Boney M sample. Soundsytem bleeps. Killer bassline. Dubbed out drums. What more do you want? And this came out the same year as the above 2 tracks. The change in sound is staggering.

Enjoy.

It's Only Words That I Say...

I love my Edits, so here is a quick post of a couple of Psych Rock ones that have been kicking about my ears for a good wee while.

Track : BEYOND THE WIZARDS SLEEVE - "WORDS"

Beyond The Wizards Sleeve is the collaboration of remixer, producer, club promoter and all round busy bee Erol Alkan and The Grid's Richard Norris. Together they explore the outer reaches of psychedelic rock and folk. Under this guise they have put out EP's of re-edits of old tracks (in limited numbers, no doubt down to copyright issues) and a handful of remixes for people like Midlake, Tracey Thorn and Peter, Bjorn & John. Well, not for people like them. Actually for those people...

"Words" is from last years Beyond The Wizards Sleeve EP, "Spring". I don't have a clue who the original version of this track is by (if anybody does then please let me know via the forum...) but I do know that I am a huge sucker for it's dubbed up vocals, it's freak out sound effects, it's piercing guitars, wigged out organ and killer chorus.

Track : CAN - "MOTHER SKY (PILOOSKI EDIT)"

I am a bit more familiar with Can and their legendary, rhythmical Krautrock. This, albeit shorter, re-edit of "Mother Sky" from their 1970 "Soundtracks" album is a belter. "Soundtracks" was the album that both saw the departure of their first vocalist, Malcolm Mooney, who was replaced with the legendary Damo Suzuki, and it also saw them veer more towards the more electronic sound they became famous for and away from their early Psychedelic sound. "Mother Sky" sits with the latter. Here, Pilooski, from the rather excellent D*I*R*T*Y Edit's crew out of France, prolongs the appearance of the freak out guitars by letting the rhythm and Suzuki's woozy vocals take hold first. Strap yourself in for the second half...

Enjoy.

Track : TRACEY THORN - "GRAND CANYON"

I'm still quite taken aback by the way wistful, 80's, husband and wife duo Everything But The Girl reinvented themselves in the dance field. Through their own work veering from gentle acoustic pop songs towards House and Drum & Bass, Ben Watt currently being at the cutting edge of the UK's Deep House scene and then Tracey Thorn hooking up with Massive Attack and now releasing a solo electronic / dance album with the great Ewan Pearson at the helm. It's a remarkable transformation.

I had high hopes for Tracey's current and second solo album, her first, "A Distant Shore", was released 25 years ago... And going on the career trajectory, and with Ewan Pearson on board, I was expecting it to be full of thumping club tracks. It's not. Don't get me wrong the production is great, it's electronic heart compliments the contemplative nature of Thorns songs, it just took me a while to get over what I expected it to be. I just wish there were more songs like "Grand Canyon" on the album though...

"Grand Canyon" is what I wanted the whole album to be like. It's the highlight for me. Once that bass hook kicks in, I'm lost. It's a great, moody dance track.

Track : ROISIN MURPHY - "OVERPOWERED (KRIS MENACE INSTRUMENTAL MIX)"

I've already posted, on the forum, how I think that Roisin Murphy's new track is, to my ears, one of the best this year. With it's squelchy 303's and her wonky lyrics about science struggling to explain the oxytoxins flowing through her brain... It also gets a bonus tick from me as Seiji from the legendary broken beat crew, Bugz In The Attic, helped pen it.

"Overpowered" has a glut of remixes, so it's decisions, decisions as to what one to post. Out of my favourites, do I go for the insane "Herve And Roisin In The Secret Garden Mix" (up there with Justice's Franz Ferdinand kicking from a year or so ago for madness) or plump for the warm Euro House - with a dash of Italo - vocal mix by Kris Menace?

I was going to go with the latter, but I then got my mits on an instrumental version of it, which I loved even more. Without Roisin's voice it bares no relation at all to the original. It stands alone as a nice summer House track.

Track : MARGARET BERGER - "ROBOT SONG"

Guilty pleasure time. Towards the end of last year / beginning of this year, there were two female singers I kind of got obsessed about. One was the Swedish, Italo Disco Princess, Sally Shapiro and the other was Margaret Berger.

Promise not to run away when I tell you that she was the runner up in the second series of Norwegian Idol?

Before your manufactured pop / pap alarm bells start ringing and have you running for cover, hear me out...

"Robot Song" was the first thing I heard by her and sparked my interest. Here is a quirky, polished, electro pop song in which she proclaims her love for an, erm, Robot... but she can't tell her dad...

It was after hearing this that I discovered she'd been on Norway's version of Pop Idol. I couldn't put 2 and 2 together. How could a glorified karaoke competition contestant put out stuff like this? There would be no chance that Cowell and Co would ever let any of the UK entrants into these competitions put out anything so leftfield, even though it's still very much accessible. Hats off to the Norwegians for doing so though.

I managed to pick up the album and fell for it's pure cutting edge pop. A heterosexual, 35 year old guy, shouldn't be getting a kick from this stuff, but I just couldn't resist it. The team of producers working behind the scenes on ths CD composed some fabulous state of the art pop songs for her. There are songs on here that if Kylie, Sophie Ellis Bextor, even Girls Aloud got there hands on then they'd be at number one for weeks. Check out the videos below, imagine Bextor singing "Samantha"... Imagine Girls Aloud doing "Will You Remember Me Tomorrow"...

And on the subject of videos, Feist could soon be losing her quirky video dancing crown if Tracey Thorn's "It's All True" and those Margaret Berger promos are anything to go by...

Enjoy.

Bootlegs. Remember them? They used to be the bread and butter of The Pipe.

To be honest, I gorged too much on them and grew sick of them. So I don't follow the scene anymore and I only hear the odd uninspired one every now and then.

That is until now...

Track : DJ MAGNET - "LOVE COMES RUNNING UP THAT HILL QUICKLY"

This track came to my attention this morning via C4 Teletext's Planet Sound page, in which they said that the Pet Shop Boys had given their blessing to it.

It's a mash up of Placebo's cover version of Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" and the Pet Shop Boys "Love Comes Quickly".

At this point I shoud say that the Kate Bush version is one of my all time favourite records. Probably because I find it rather odd. Odder still is that it got to #3 in 1985. Is it a pop record? With those strange atmospheres and bizarre muffled barking synth lines? So when people cover it I kind of fear that they'll ruin the ambience of it all.

Placebo covered it a few years back for their covers album that was bundled with "Sleeping With Ghosts". I was impressed, so much so I think it's as good as the original. They stripped it back, slowed it down a little and added a new, minimal eeriness to it all thus showing an understanding of the track. Gold star to Placebo! Gold Star removed from Placebo when later in the CD they managed to shit all over, another of my fsvourite tracks, Serge Gainsbourg's "The Ballad Of Melody Nelson". Pfft.

The bootleg features a lot of the Placebo version and has parts of the Pet Shop Boys track weaving in and out beautifully. But the killer is in the last minute when Kate makes a brief appearance. The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end the first time I listened to it as I wasn't expecting it.

Track : KATE BUSH - "RUNNING UP THAT HILL (12" VERSION)"

As a bonus, here's the 12" version of the original.

Also worth tracking down is Claudia Brucken and Andrew Poppy's bare bones cover of "Running Up That Hill". Just beautiful piano lines and Brucken's amazing voice.

And, If you didn't pick it up when mentioned in the forum, head over to DATASSETTE's site, click on "Music", scroll down a bit and listen to his excellent electro rework of "Running Up That Hill".

Attempting to curse the good weather yet again...

I posted my "Sun In My Morning" comp a couple of weeks back when the weather was bright and warm. A day later, it all took a turn for the worse.

Well, now the sun is back out again, I thought I'd post up a couple of bits and bobs that didn't make it into the previous post.

Just watch those rainclouds roll in once I hit "publish"...

Track : RENE & ANGELA - "I LOVE YOU MORE (MR K's INSTRUMENTAL EDIT)"

Actually, this appeared in my "Sun In My Morning" comp and was the impetus in putting the thing together. I picked this up over on Bumrocks back in the middle of May and it just seemed like the perfect summer record. And I still do. It's 26 years old and its slow motion disco makes the hairs on my neck stand up. Got to love that piano riff, those strings and even the cheeky synth riff that gives a passing nod to "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy"...

Danny Krivit just lets the track groove away at it's own pace. It's a fantastic edit that is in no hurry whatsoever.

The funny thing is, I'd never heard it before and then a couple of weeks back I was on my decks and discovered the vocal version of the track on an album compiled by the legend that is Francois Kevorkian... And even then, I didn't want to play it incase it tarnished my love for this instrumental.

I actually only played the vocal version whilst typing this up, and I can report that it is great.

The curse and joys of having a big record collection...

Track : SHOLA AMA - "YOU'RE THE ONE I LOVE (D'INFLUENCE PARADISE MIX)"

Ok, now onto the ones that didn't make it. But keeping in that disco mode...

Here early 90's soulsters, D'Influence, do a number on Shola's '97 R&B hit "You're The One I Love". And what a job they do too. Taking the infamous Paradise Garage DJ Larry Levan's classic remix of Gwen Guthrie's "Seventh Heaven" as the base, they then work Shola Ama's vocals around it.

Absolutely stunning. It's always a sunny day when you get to hear that "Seventh Heaven" Sly & Robbie rhythm...

Track : RAY MANG - "LOVE DANCING"

Another disco reworking. This time "Let's Lovedance Tonight" by Gary's Gang gets the instrumental edit treatment from Block 16 member Ray Mang. Don't get me wrong, the original is great, but to just have the track breezing along with that repetative melody (you may recognise it as it was sampled by Soulsearcher on their 1998 house track "Can't Get Enough") is pure bliss.

Track : CHAKA KHAN with RUFUS - "AIN'T NOBODY (FRANKIE KNUCKLES REMIX)"

Balearic classic time. Back in the day this was a big end of night anthem for Alfredo at Amnesia and for Rampling back at Shoom. Again, great as the original is, you want to hear what House god Frankie Knuckles has done to it...

It's almost an instrumetal take on it, but it's been toughened up big time and made to sound really trippy by echoing off the pianos and Chaka's vocals whenever they appear.

Enjoy.

...and afternoon and evening.

Blissful music for blissful days.

Oh, the weather's been good hasn't it?

The sun makes an appearance and I go digging for tunes to compliment it.

I would have dug out my summer comp I made up back in December of last year to see me through a summer down under, but it's already made a brief appearance on The Pipe and, to be honest, I'm kind of fed up hearing it.

So at the weekend, I dived back into my records...

The resulting compilation (not a mix) is below.

Nothing fancy or clever, just some good tunes for days like these.

So wrap your aural receptors around this, go for a walk, or a drive, buy yourself a cone and enjoy...

Techno Table Tennis?

After getting over the shock that the infamous Rockstar Games decided to ditch their brand of the old ultra-violence in favour of Table Tennis, the next shock coming was the tracklisting...

Not that I would have had any fears over a Rockstar Games soundtrack, as they have proven time and time again to get it right. It was just the fact that they had licensed so many Techno and Tech House tracks.

Techno and Table Tennis?

The disappointment did come when I discovered that you only heard brief snippets of the tracks on the menus or when you managed to get a decent rally going - the house lights dim and the music seeps through the atmosphere, adding to the intensity, only for you to fluff a shot under the pressure - Why put in all those tracks when you don't get enough time to enjoy them?

My disappointment turned to joy when I discovered that once you started to unlock other places to play in the game, especially the more intimate Room settings, you got to hear these deep slices of music in their entirety.

Hoorah!

Anyway, it's a devilishly addictive game and the music is superb. Nuff said.

Below are a few of the tracks featured in it...

Track : R-TYME - "R-THEME"

Words like "genius" and "innovator" are never far away when Derrick May's name gets mentioned. I tried not to use them, but it's very difficult. The guy deserves them. I won't bore you if you don't know about him, but I will mention the fact that he, along with two friends, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson, changed dance music forever. They were the pioneers of Detroit Techno.

This tune is not that far off from being 20 years old now and shows that the blueprint he and his cohorts drew up back then is still far from old. At a time when people labelled dance music as being emotionless, he proved them all wrong...

Track : LOS HERMANOS - "RESURRECTION"

More Detroit stylings. And the credentials are equally as good on this one. Released on Detroit Techno legend Mad Mike Banks' Submerge label, Los Hermanos are made up of various members of the notorious Underground Resistance group. "Resurrection" is from their excellent 2004 album "On Another Level", a great collection of deep, funky, techy grooves that the compilers of the game must have loved as they plundered it twice... Their "Birth Of 3000" track also appears on the soundtrack.

Track : ALEX SMOKE - "CHICA WAPPA"

Ah, a repost. I had this one up on The Pipe back in April of last year. Go here if you want to know what I said about it...

Alex Smoke is signed to Soma Recordings, a Glasgow label that have been keeping the Techno spirit alive in all its forms for over 15 tears now. Again the compilers must love the label as tracks by Envoy and Vector Lovers appear in the game too.

Enjoy.

The most requested song on The Pipe...

Track : THE DOORS - "BOSSA ROCKER"

Apparently there are people who still haven't heard this great remix of The Doors "Break On Through".

So in response to the handful of emails I've had about this track in my mailbox over the past couple of months, as promised, I've decided to dig it out yet again...

The original post I made about the track can be read here.

Track : THE DOORS - "RIDERS ON THE STORM (SPACEBATS REMIX)"

And as a bonus, I've dug out this other great Doors remix.

This reminds me of being in Ibiza a few years ago, sitting in a hammock, nursing a beer and watching the sunset. The atmosphere was nearly ruined by the presence of some black clouds appearing on the horizon, but the DJ who was doing the sunset shift was quick to adapt his tunes...

For about 2 minutes he played loads of rainforest noises and sound effects of thunderstorms, then as the sun disappeared into the clouds, with only giant shards of light poking out of the gaps in the darkness, he dropped this...

Enjoy.
