It's taken me 7 months to finally get my hands on this...

I heard this back in February on Gilles Peterson's Worldwide show. It was one of those crank the stereo up real loud scenarios when it was in full flow. And seeing as I heard it on the stereo in Jimmy The Flid's car, then it was really loud indeed. It stopped the conversation that we were having about M.I.A, whose gig we were returning home from, and the pair of us, who have lapsed a little in listening to Gilles, both turned and said how much we had missed listening to his eclectic selections...

Track : NATHAN FAKE - "DINAMO"

The thing is, I felt disappointed when I played the record when I finally got it. I thought I had picked the wrong 12" up. What I heard that night back in February was imprinted in my memory, and this record just wasn't matching it. Then the half way point in the tune came around...

You see "Dinamo" is a 10 minute workout and most definitely a record of two halves...

The first half is all glitchy cuts and drops of weird noises and tones that are at odds with the rest of the track. We're talking tonal melodies that drift off out of tune here. A beat and some long Boards Of Canada style synth lines try and keep you focused but it all seems disjointed and weird, but at the same time strangely hypnotic.

Then at the 5 and a half minute mark you realise that young Nathan Fake (and yes, that is his real name) has basically been having a piss about. He's more or less been tuning up or just testing out the sounds for what is to come. 5 minutes thirty is like the musical equivalent of him rolling his sleeves up and getting on with the job in hand.

What follows is a tight moody, techy style House track with plenty of 303's to keep an old Acid head like me happy. It was this section of the record that had left it's mark on me that night.

Infact, and here comes the praise, if someone had told me that this was by Pepe Bradock (a big favourite of mine and already featured on The Pipe) then I would have believed them. "Dinamo" is as beautifully wonky and similar in style to some of Pepe's back catalogue.

It was well worth the 7 month hunt.

Lost Bootlegs
Posted by Budgie at 02:41 PM

#3 in an occasional series...

#1 - ST3PAN0VA - "DUB MONDAY"
#2 - SOUNDHOG - "A DAY IN TRACY'S LIFE"

And now...

Track : JPL - "SHANNON IS THE DRUG FOR ME"

I'd forgotten just how simple and good this was.

I hadn't heard it for a very long time and then it took me by surprise again when the wife had it blaring out in her car a couple of weeks back whilst she was playing some old CD's I had made up for her.

It's not as technical as the previous 2 Lost Bootlegs and is very much in the old style A+B mould of the genre.

Actually, I'm belittling it just a tad. JPL has knocked up a great tight loop comprising of Roxy Music's "Love Is The Drug" and Santana's "Oye Como". Even though it's a great head nodding, funky rhythm the clincher is the inclusion of the vocals from Shannon's "Give Me Tonight". The original Shannon track is a heady mix of electro beats and effects that, along with her other classic "Let The Music Play", were huge hits with clubbers and school kids spinning on their backs on sheets of lino back in the early 80's.

To hear the vocals away from their original production and then slapped on top of a well known riff is great and they compliment each other well.

It sounds really fresh considering the Roxy track is around 30 years old now and Shannon's is around 20...

The Pipe @ 50
Posted by Budgie at 01:23 PM

50 posts strong. Time for a round up...

As I mentioned last week, the Pipe is now a grand fifty posts old.

So to celebrate, I thought I'd give some of the previous tracks another airing. It's not really a "best of...", more a retrospective. Some of the tracks have been chosen by members of the House Of Cuss forum, others have been shosen again by me purely because I like them.

(click "more info" to be taken to the previous Pipe post about the track. There you will find info on the artists websites and links to buy their music.)

Track : SEIJI FEAT LYRIC L - "LOOSE LIPS"

303 bubbling, Broken Beat track with some fine vocal dexterity provided by Lyric L

(more info)

Track : CIARA FEAT M.I.A - "GOODIES (RICHARD X MIX)"

Ciara's big hit given the Richard X treatment and the excellent M.I.A adds her lyrical weight to it too. (M.I.A was robbed of the Mercury Music Prize! - Go buy "Arular" - Album Of The Year in my eyes!)

(more info)

Track : ST3PAN0VA - "DUB MONDAY"

Great bootleg treatment of the New Order classic "Blue Monday". Here it's reworked and remixed into a Studio One style dub.

(more info)

Track : SOUNDHOG - "A DAY IN TRACY'S LIFE"

Take The Beatles, Mogwai and Kid Loco and let the Welsh wonderkid rework them into another great bootleg.

(more info)

Track : JAZZTRONIK - "SAMURAI"

Piano led Broken Beat monster! A belter of a dance track.

(more info)

Track : KMC - "SYSTEM"

Atmospheric Drum And Bass with a nice touch of melancholy to it.

(more info)

Track : PLEATED LEMON - "SAFETY SONG"

Quirky song about what to do in the event of a fire...

(more info)

Track : DROME - "HINTERLAND, KASSLER KESSEL"

Incredibly woozy and strange Ambient Dub style track that I managed to get played at LOOSHKIN.

(more info)

Track : THE TIMEWRITER - "LOST IN LYRIX"

The track I never got to play at LOOSHKIN. Shame, as it is a great hybrid of Ambient, Electro and Techno.

(more info)

Track : INGRID DE LAMBRE FEAT EDDIE DEF - "POEISIES, SCENE 1 LE BLUES"

A French instrumental Jazz/Hip Hop crossover given a Turntablist remix by the Bay Area's Eddie Def.

(more info)

Track : MARSHALL JEFFERSON PRESENTS TRUTH - "OPEN OUR EYES (MARSHALL'S ELEVATED DUB)"

Classic Deep House from the legendary Marshall Jefferson.

(more info)

Track : SADE - "EARTHSONG (WONDERLAND MIX)"

Great dubby house rework of Sade's "Slave Song".

(more info)

A special mention, and thanks, should also go to both Sie and JimmyThe Flid for providing some top notch tunes for The Pipe too.

Sie's tracks are still available online :

"EISEDEN" / "THE LAST TRAIN TO NOWHERE" / M.I.A - "URAQT (SIE REMIX)" / SERAPHAN - "FLASHPOINT" / SERAPHAN - "INNER SANCTUM" / THE BEEKEEPER Vs JIMMY THE FLID - "CIRCULAR FIRING SQUAD Ver.2"

And Jimmy's "WHAT YOU SOLD ME" EP can still be picked up HERE.

If you had missed any of the above tracks, then I hope you enjoy them, and if you're a regular then I hope you have enjoyed them too along with the other selections that have been chosen over these past 50 posts.

Back to normal next week. Plenty of things in the pipeline, no pun intended... So keep checking up on The Pipe.

And remember to let me know what you think of the selections over on The Pipe section on the House Of Cuss Forum.

Ta,
Budgie.
