What You Waiting for?
Posted by Budgie at 05:19 PM

New Server.

New Edition Of The Pipe.

New Opening Paragraph.

New Balls Please.

Well due to the recent House Of Cuss server move The Pipe was blocked until everything was working properly. Well, it looks like Sie got Dyno-Rod in and my Pipe can now flow freely again.

Unfortunately, there hasn't been many new things that have taken my fancy in the past 3 weeks or so, so it's back to the tried and trusted, and hopefully loved by you by now, bootleggers that regularly feature on here.

YES THAT MEANS THERE IS A NEW FAKE ID REMIX...

Destiny's Child - "Lose My Breath"

Oh, what a great pop record this is. I posted a link to it on here last month, so hopefully you went and downloaded it and wrapped your lugs around those killer Military drums and Beyonce and Co's honeyed vocals.

I knew it would only be a matter of time before the 'leggers muscled in on this tune and below are 3 very different takes on the track.

First up is FAKE ID's rework of it. It sounds like a tribute to the current dance darling, Mylo. Starting off with a bunch of electro buzzes, synth stabs and choppy vocals it isn't until the 2.20 mark that the synth chords kick in and smooth this out and lighten and lift the track. From then on he keeps adding more and more synth lines and builds the track up good style. Another excellent addition to the Fake ID remix back catalogue.

Next up is Team 9's take on it. This time they go for the bootleg approach on the song and pair Destiny's Child up with the current, and Gallagher and Lyle sampling, tune from Lemon Jelly, "Stay With Me".

Kyaal on the other hand rebuilds the acapella of "Lose My Breath" over the top of a homemade skanking reggae track. It makes for interesting listening to hear the song being played at this tempo and very good it is too.

Loo & Placido "Rigby Reggae"

No, it has nothing to do with Leonard Rossiter or Rising Damp, but in keeping with the Kyaal track, it is reggae.

French duo Loo & Placido have been on the bootleg scene for a while and I can't recommend their stuff enough. Their reputation has been noted and so much so that MTV got them to provide all the music and mixes for the nominee announcements at this weeks MTV Europe Music Awards.

Below is the Loo & Placido bootleg reggae treatment of The Beatles classic "Eleanor Rigby". And it is faultless.

Team 9 - "Emotional Treason"

Want to hear Whitney Houston being turned into a Death Disco diva? Then download this latest Team 9 mash.

Her "So Emotional" track is dropped over the jaggy guitars and bubbling electronics of Kasabian's "Reason Is Treason". It shouldn't work, but it does and is brilliant. Shame it's a bit on the short side though.

Gwen Stefani - "What You Waiting For (McSleazy Remix)"

Like the Destiny's track, I can't get enough of this current pop song. Especially this version as it's probably been the most played bootleg by me in the past few weeks.

Glasgow's McSleazy tightens the track up big time, sprinkles his electro dust over the top and adds what sounds like a Fade To Grey-esque bassline to the proceedings.

I absolutely love this.

U2 - "Vertigo (K.O Ride The Trip Mix)"

I know I posted Party Ben's bootleg of "Vertigo" a while ago, but this version hits it for six.

I only picked this up today and it has been on heavy rotation. A killer, driving, 8 minutes of beats, guitars, synths and Bono.

I don't know much about the guy behind it, Kostas Petropoulos (K.O for short), but his website has a wealth of remixes he has done to download - which I'll probably do over the next couple of days - and if they are as half as good as this then I'll be well chuffed.

I should point out as well that there is an instrumental version of this track and it is equally as good.

Check his site out for more stuff.

The Flaming Lips - "Spongebob And Patrick Confront The Psychic Wall Of Energy"
Frank Zappa - "Bobby Brown Goes Down"

A couple of daft and charming tracks to finish off.

First up is The Flaming Lips contribution to the soundtrack of the Spongebob Squarepants film. I put my hands up and say I have never seen the cartoon so I can't comment on it. I can say that this Flaming Lips track sees them back to being the playful and amusing band I remember them being from before "The Soft Bulletin". Guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

{I picked this up over on the excellent "Silence Is A Rhythm Two" blog. Which is well worth a look at as they also have Prince Paul's contribution to the Squarebob soundtrack too. And I can also recommend the Fila Brazillia remix of A Certain Ratio's "Wild Party" that they have up, the Black Leotard Front track from the current DFA box set and they also have some Joy Division and Happy Mondays tracks up for your listening pleasure too. Go see...)

Lastly for this edition, I finish on one of my all time favourite songs.

"Bobby Brown Goes Down" by Frank Zappa is one of the funniest songs you'll hear. I won't go into any detail about Zappa as I'll be here for ages, but this is a brilliantly catchy song from the bizarre mind of Zappa and it has some of the most twisted, but funny, lyrics ever in a pop song. I won't ruin it for you, just download and listen... Oh, and it has nothing to do with Whitney Houston's Bobby Brown.

John Peel is dead.

America is about to go to the polls and probably re-elect Bush.

And if you think things couldn't get better, then you're right. Here's another Pipe stoked with the usual people...

Sie - "Eiseden (original mix)"

Oh, you're going to need a comfy chair, some headphones and a cup of coffee for this one.

Sie has turned out a twelve and half minute ambient, downtempo epic.

He's told me it was inspired by the first two tracks used on my own "H.D.S" Mix, those being No-Man's "Back To The Burning Shed" and Brian Eno's "2/1". The influence of those tracks is definately there, but in adding a low slung beat and bassline, treating all his keyboard lines with shimmering Eno-esque echoes, his usual attention to detail and layered production methods he has created a beautiful, head nodding thing of chilled loveliness that you shouldn't hesitate to download. Go get it!

Slowdive - "In Mind (Reload Remix - The 147 Take)"
Slowdive - "In Mind (Bandulu's Out Of Mind Remix)"

I've mentioned before on The Pipe about my love of the band Slowdive and featured their cover of "Some Velvet Morning" a couple of Pipe's back. I won't bore you again as to why I love them, but at the end of their short career they had started experimenting more within the Ambient and Electronica field. Here are 2 fine examples of this with these remixes of their "In Mind" track which appeared on a limited edition CD of their "5 EP".

First up is Reload's ten minute ambient remix of it. Reload were Tom Middleton and Mark Pritchard. They recorded under various guises in the 90's, under names like Link, Jedi Knights, E621, Global Communications and many more. Their music and alter ego's spanned genres like Ambient, Techno, House and Drum & Bass. Tom, being friends with Richard D James (The Aphex Twin), worked with him in the early part of his career and was partly responsible for the seminal "Analogue Bubblebatch EP". Both Tom and Mark are still recording and still spanning dance musics genres, Tom still puts out stuff under his own name and the more dancier Cosmos guise and Mark records under the name Harmonic 33 and Troubleman (who's album "Time...Out Of Mind" came out earlier this year and is very good indeed).

Bandulu's take is a much heavier affair. Bandulu were always an assault on the senses with their pummeling dub soundsystem approach to things like Electro and Detroit Techno. They appeared on the scene around about the same time as Middleton/Pritchard and were signed to the same label as them, the influential Infonet. Bandulu are still going and show no signs of softening their sound.

Both of these tracks and other Slowdive tracks can be found here on the Slowdive Rare Tracks and B-Sides site.

Global Communication - "The Way (Secret Ingredients Mix)"

Talking of Global Communication... They were more renowned for their Ambient work like their classic "76:14" album, their remix album entitled "Re:Motion" and their "Pentamerous Metamorphosis" album which was a rework of Indie / Shoegazing band, Chapterhouse.

Then "The Way" dropped and it showed them moving straight for the dancefloor with this deep, hypnotic house record.

"The Way" came out in 1996 and since then this record has never ventured far from the front of my record pile and is always thrown onto my Technics whenever I decide to annoy the neighbours with my mixing.

It's a long forgotten British house classic, so get downloading and lose yourself in this 12 minute monster. It's just a shame you can't pitch it up to +4 as it rocks at that speed.

Gotan Project - "El Capitalismo Foraneo"

I was lucky enough to stumble across the whole of the Gotan Project's "La Revancha Del Tango" debut album online. Their music has been a staple in my house ever since I heard Gilles Peterson play their monster "Triptico" tune back in 2000. So I've picked my favourite track from their album, that being "El Capitalismo Foraneo".

The Gotan Project is the work of 2 Parisian musicians who have managed to seemlessly blend their love for Paris Cafe music, the Tango and the genius that is Astor Piazzolla, Dance music and Dub.

You will recognise the sound as their music has been used and copied in various adverts.

Team9 - "Brass Trouble"

At long last, Australia's Team 9 make a very welcome return. They have been responsible for a few brilliant boots already this year, The "Me Against The Monkey" boot that featured Britney & Madonna taking on The Pixies and the "About A Girl In My Dreams" one that featured Depeche Mode and Nirvana (both of which are available on their site - see link below).

After a few months away, "Brass Trouble" sees them come back with a boot of the Beastie Boys "Triple Trouble" and The Pretenders "Brass In Pocket". It took me a couple of listens to get my head around it as I'm used to the more frenetic "Triple Trouble" boots that are kicking about, but this works and top marks for including a cheeky snippet of the Beastie Boys' "Brass Monkey".

half.arsed.beats - "Party Favour #1"
The Infadels - "Give Yourself To Me (Fake ID Remix)"

Ach, it was about time I featured some new Lionel Vinyl stuff. Actually, come to think about it, I did hide his remix of The Smith's "Bigmouth Strikes Again" in a Pipe a few issues back.

half.arsed.beats is his new alter-ego to add to the ever expanding list. This time around if it has that name attatched to it then it's guaranteed to be a more breaksy affair. "Party Favour #1" sees him throwing together and glitching up Dee-Lite's "Groove Is In The Heart" and Salt N Pepa's "Push It" with his usual high standard of remix work.

His Fake ID guise then takes on The Infadels track that is featured in the 3 Mobile advert with the giant Jellyfish. So if you want to hear THAT bassline given the Fake ID treatment, then get downloading. And trust me, it's a belter.

DJ Zebra - "Come Closer"

Another 'legger that I have been featuring a lot of recently is DJ Zebra and again he has come up with the goods. If your head is still spinning from his Rage Against The Machine / Shaggy boot from the last Pipe then wait till you hear this unlikely combination of Nine Inch Nails' "Closer" and The Beatles "Come Together"...

That little lot should keep your ears warm for the next two weeks. Again, feel free to discuss these tracks in the Forum.
