It's taken me 7 months to finally get my hands on this...

I heard this back in February on Gilles Peterson's Worldwide show. It was one of those crank the stereo up real loud scenarios when it was in full flow. And seeing as I heard it on the stereo in Jimmy The Flid's car, then it was really loud indeed. It stopped the conversation that we were having about M.I.A, whose gig we were returning home from, and the pair of us, who have lapsed a little in listening to Gilles, both turned and said how much we had missed listening to his eclectic selections...

Track : NATHAN FAKE - "DINAMO"

The thing is, I felt disappointed when I played the record when I finally got it. I thought I had picked the wrong 12" up. What I heard that night back in February was imprinted in my memory, and this record just wasn't matching it. Then the half way point in the tune came around...

You see "Dinamo" is a 10 minute workout and most definitely a record of two halves...

The first half is all glitchy cuts and drops of weird noises and tones that are at odds with the rest of the track. We're talking tonal melodies that drift off out of tune here. A beat and some long Boards Of Canada style synth lines try and keep you focused but it all seems disjointed and weird, but at the same time strangely hypnotic.

Then at the 5 and a half minute mark you realise that young Nathan Fake (and yes, that is his real name) has basically been having a piss about. He's more or less been tuning up or just testing out the sounds for what is to come. 5 minutes thirty is like the musical equivalent of him rolling his sleeves up and getting on with the job in hand.

What follows is a tight moody, techy style House track with plenty of 303's to keep an old Acid head like me happy. It was this section of the record that had left it's mark on me that night.

Infact, and here comes the praise, if someone had told me that this was by Pepe Bradock (a big favourite of mine and already featured on The Pipe) then I would have believed them. "Dinamo" is as beautifully wonky and similar in style to some of Pepe's back catalogue.

It was well worth the 7 month hunt.
