"If Music be the food of love, then praise The Pipe for supplying the scones." - Budgie

Ooooh, come on. Ooh yeah.

Well, I tried to tell you so (Yes, I did),
But I guess you didn't know,
that my blog it had to go,
But it's back and got the flow.
'Cause I knew it from the start,
My MP3's they break your heart,
That I had to come again,
And show you that my Pipe is real.

No lies from me,
Wrap yer lugs around some FAKE ID,
No lies from me,
My brain is fried, yes it's fried,
No lies from me,
I've hunted down new tracks for you,
No lies from me,
My brain is fried, yes it's fried...

Return of The Pipe,
It is,
Return of The Pipe,
Come on,
Return of The Pipe,
Oh, my god,
You know that I'd be back
Here I am.

It's been a long time. I shouldn't have left you, without a bootleg to step to...

The Pipe is back.

It's not been away that long, but due to unforseen circumstances I couldn't devote time to it and for that I would say sorry, but unfortunately I had other things to deal with.

The Pipe is now back on track, for your sins, to it's usual fortnightly round up of some of the good, free MP3's you can find on the Net.

Well, to my ears anyway...

McSleazy - "Renegade's Wish"

First up is a corker of a dark and atmospheric bootleg track by Glasgow's McSleazy.

Sounding like something from Massive Attack's "Mezzanine", this features Ash's "Renegade Cavalcade" and the soulful voice of Angie Stone with her "I Wish I Didn't Miss You" song. The spin on the Angie Stone vocal is tremendous as her original track is quite upbeat - and not unlike a bootleg itself seeing as it more or less lifted all of the O-Jay's "Backstabbers" song - but here her vocals blend in beautifully with the brooding backing track.

Skkatter - "Many Men Have The Fear"

Ireland's glitch king, Skkatter, isn't really known for his restraint. Check out his website and download some of his headfucking reworks of folk like Madonna and Basement Jaxx and you'll see what I mean.

Here the glitching is banished and he turns out a simple A + B boot using the strings from Ian Brown's "F.E.A.R" and the sloppy rapping of 50 Cent's "Many Men (Wish Death)".

Don't be put off by the appearance of the over rated 50 Cent, I initially was, but this has turned out to be one of my favourite bootlegs of the past month with 50's lazy rap adding to the bootlegs charm with every listen.

If you do have a look at Skkatter's site, but fear the glitching tracks, then I recommend you have a listen to his Robocop track and his Speedball 2 Theme Tune remix.

M.I.A - "Galang"

I really wanted to post about a brilliant bootleg by a guy called Geordie who used M.I.A's "Galang" and Killing Joke's "Requiem", but unfortunately it is no longer up.

So, you'll just have to make do with M.I.A's "Galang" on it's own. You may already know this tune as it has been around for quite some time now and it has been a staple on most MP3 Blogs since then too, so it's about time this MP3 Blog mentioned it. Also, you may recognise it from its use on Lionel Vinyl's remix of Kasabian's "LSF" that was posted up on the last edition of the Pipe.

She is definately a talent to watch as her last 2 releases, "Sunshowa" and "Fire Fire", are brilliant records and I for one hope her London electro take on dancehall and hip hop takes her to the heights she deserves.

Taken from the Blog "Catchdubs".
Which is well worth a look, especially if you are keen to hear the new militaristic (is that a word?) and rather good Destiny's Child song...

Lady Sovereign - "Sad Ass Strippah"

In keeping with the deep urban boom of M.I.A's "Galang", over on Boomselection I stumbled across this uncouth young lady...

Lady Sovereign (the name gives it away and yes she does look like what you think she looks like - see HERE and HERE) is another up and coming female MC from London.

Seeing as there seems to be a thing again in the music industry for "answer back" records - see Eamon and Frankie and the Mario Winens and The Pirates current efforts - Lady Sovereign has a go at Jentina.

On "Sad Ass Strippah" she has a go at Jentina's "Bad Ass Strippa" song that was kicking about over the summer. After seeing the video for that song, I think Lady Sovereign should just have left Jentina alone as the promo does enough damage to the girl (check Jentina's site for the unintentionally hilarious video).

Anyway, I have heard some fierce rap dispute records over the years, but this one takes some beating.

I await Jentina's response...

If you liked "Bad Ass Strippa" and want to hear it bootlegged with the old 80's electro pop classic "Fade To Grey" by Visage, then check out Manriki's MP3 below.

Messy James - "No More Pressure"

Yet another MP3 I have had my doubts about posting about as I reckon most folk will think it's a bit cheesy, but to be honest no one complained about the other ones I put up before, namely the Busted and Usher boots that I thought wouldn't be to everyone's taste.

This is by a first time bootlegger called Messy James. I know nothing about him, I don't even have a website for him. But I do know he has managed to put Queen and David Bowie's "Under Pressure" together with Annie Lennox' "No More I Love You's" with great ease.

Fake ID Vs...

It was a given that in my time out from The Pipe that there would be a handful of remixes by the prolific Fake ID. Here are just a few of my recent favourites by him.

First up is the soon to be huge "Chewing Gum" song by Annie. The original production was the work of one Mr Richard X working with Norwegian Annie Lilia Berge. Here Fake ID gives it his usual electro rework, but still retains the original tracks brain numbing repetative pop sensibilities.

Next, "You Want Me" is the work of a new band, and friends of Fake ID, called The Objects. Their debut single "Gravity" was released last week and here the B-side to it is given the Fake ID rerub. To quote the man himself the remix contains "approx 1% of the original song (namely a vocal refrain and one guitar lick - heavily treated..)". The rest is a belter of a Fake ID remix and special mention should go to the lush, almost orchestral synths that kick in around the 3 minute mark.

Lastly, and he is a brave man for attempting it, he takes on what is possibly one of dance music's all time golden moments, Rhythim Is Rhythim's "Strings Of Life". This Detroit techno classic appeared on these shores circa 1987 and became a tune that pretty much defined that heady Acid House, Warehouse Rave scene that is affectionately referred to as the "'88 Summer Of Love".

Here Fake ID pretty much treats the original Derrick May compostion with respect. Although he removes most of that tracks infamous stringy techno stabs, he does retain the piano riff and adds the only thing missing from the orginal - a bassline.

Does he pull it off? Well, as much as I do love the original and the track is pretty much my stock answer when folk ask me what my favourite dance record is, he does do a decent, and as mentioned above, respectful update of it.

If you've not heard the orginal and have even the slightest passing interest in dance music, then seek it out. Even if you think it sounds dated, you'll hear basically what was to become a blueprint for about 10 years worth of copycat records that never even came close.

Ninja Tunes

Ninja Tune are easily one of the most forward thinking independant leftfield dance labels in the country and it came as some surprise that I stumbled across this treasure trove of freebies.

Ninja Tune, founded by Matt Black and Jonathan More of Coldcut, have over the past ten years been at the forefront of putting out some of the strangest and blissful head nodding music you'll hear. Everything from house, dub, drum and bass, funk, hip hop, ambient and jazz has been mutated by the Ninja Tune crew.

There is a wealth of stuff in their back catalogue and it can be daunting to know where to start. Ordinarily I would point you to the sublime "Zen CD - A Ninja Tune Retrospective", and you should check it out, but here I'll give you 3 Ninja highlights.

First is DJ Food's "Dark Lady", a bass-ey monster with hip hop beats, a lovely chiming refrain and a Jewish Harp.

Next up, is Coldcut's own "Atomic Moog" given a total kicking by Japan's Cornelius. He keeps the Rakim sample, but loses all the great atomic bomb recollections by the crew of the Enola Gay and the multitude of other samples that made up the original. But he does create a noisy, beat heavy, effects laden remix of it.

Finally, The Cinematic Orchestra's "All That I Give", would bring a tear to a glass eye. The Cinematic Orchestra name pretty much sums up what they do, Atmospheric, Jazzy, Film Noir-esque atmospherics. I can't recommend them highly enough and urge you to investigate all their albums and if you get a chance to see them perform live then don't pass it up as you'll miss one of the best live shows you'll ever see. This song is sung by Fontella Bass, she of the big sixties hit "Rescue Me". Here she is paying homage to her late husband and great Jazz trumpeter, Lester Bowie and The Cinematic Orchestra provide their trademark sound as backing.
