1 day to go...
Posted by Simon at May 27, 2004 04:07 PM

With only one day left now until the start of the fifth Big Brother, the press have been whipped up in to a bit of a frenzy after details of the live Saturday night tasks were made public slightly ahead of themselves...

A couple of TV listings websites revealed the fact that the second weeks live task (which appears to be hosted by Davina this time instead of only being the voice of the Geordie bloke and then the Big Brother voice telling housemates what to do) would see housemates losing part of their prize fund if they fail the task.

Of course the papers jumped on this and have come up with all sorts of stories related to how the prize money could be different from previous years, with the most likely being that it's upped from £70k to £100k this time, but will see £10,000 taken off for each Saturday nights task which the housemates blunder their way through - much as was the case with Channel 4's excellent Shattered show a few months ago.

No doubt housemates will be able to claw back their prize fund by performing gambles and forefits, but as a couple of papers put it, the winner could walk away with absoloutely NOTHING. Usally the Saturday night task went on to reward housemates with a treat, and although it might be the same this year, the loss of £10,000 seems to have replaced this, and it'd appear that maybe housemates will come in for a different form of booze restriction - in the form of Big Brother's say-so....

...because this year it's rumoured that Big Brother will keep full control over when the housemates get to drink. It's thought that previous years, where the housemates would spend their shopping budget weekly, get pissed out of their heads on the first night that the shopping arrived, and then lazed around with nothing to do for the rest of the week, are NOT how Big Brother producers want this latest series to go, and instead will only let them at the booze if things hot up a bit first, with some action from the housemates which the producers feel is worth rewarding with a fridge full of booze.

It also looks like squabbling couples is a NO-GO for Big Brother 5, as several websites are reporting that Big Brother producers saw fit to remove them from the final line-up saying that the idea of the show is to throw together 12 strangers who simply don't know each other and quite possibly wouldn't get on. Rumour has it that although the producers wanted to see some bitching between a couple or two, they also worried that the couple might have worked out tactics long before entering the house, and may end up separating themselves from the rest of the group and being able to win by simply splitting off from the rest. Maybe this opens the way for a future Big Brother Couples show, much like Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

Big Brother Little Brother kick-starts the first nights action at 8pm on Friday, and there's the live Launch Show where all the new rules (The Eye expects only some of them to be revealed, and further twists and turns to be stored up until they're really needed during the series, or more likely until the producers move the goalposts and change the rules) are to be revealed when Davina takes viewers on a quick pre-launch tour of the house and it's facilities from 10pm. "The Eye will get back to you".
